Pool Team League

Description
Mechanicsburg Area Senior Adult Center

Frank Fiscella concentrates on a shot to clinch a win for the Mechanicsburg area Senior Adult Center Team

Description: Our pool table wasn't getting much use, so I threatened to have

it removed. A few men expressed concern and started gathering their friends and playing pool regularly. Eventually, they contacted other local Centers and formed a league. They have a schedule and even a league banquet with awards, all which they planned and organized themselves. It has added a great deal of interest to a mundane sort of activity and has been a real draw for men (and a few women).

Target Audience: Active Seniors, primarily men

Organizations involved: Three other Senior Centers, and hopefully more soon.

Impact: It has added a highly visible program for men to our Center's offerings and the Pool Team activity adds a level of competitive excitement when there is a league game. Also, pool team members have volunteered to help with other Center fund raisers and programs, and have recruited new Center members. The inter-center contact also helps to extend friendships and promote understanding between people of different communities.

Problems: Setting up rules of play that are agreeable to all. Example: One Center would not join the league because 8 ball was the chosen game and they wanted to play 9 ball.  As the team grows, the amount of play each player gets is reduced. I wish we had room for another pool table.
